module 13 blog

1. why would you use HTTP or FTP instead of bitTorrent for downloading large files
ANS: security. it would be a reason for using HTTP or FTP instead of bitTorrent, because when you download a file with HTTP or FTP it requires client authentication

2. which command would you give to perform a complete upgrade.
ANS: command    aptitude full-upgrade     would upgrade all packages.

3. why would you build a package from its source code when a (binary) deb files is available
ANS: when you build a package from source code APT does not keep index an chache files for source files as it does for binary files. with source code files you can modify them and binary you can`t

4. suggest two advantages that deb files have over source distribution.
ANS: a. deb files can be manually located, downloaded and installed
           b. deb files can be created same as creating a kernel

5. when you compile a package yourself, rather than from a deb file, which directory hierarchy should you put it in.
ANS: when one creates a package, is a good idea to place it in the     /usr/local   directory

6. which steps should you take before performing an upgrade on a mission critical server.
ANS: to upgrade on a mission critical server. first, you must run command    aptitude update.   then make sure the local package indexes are up to date. second  use the   aptitude safe-upgrade   command to upgrade all packages on the system.

The Open Prosthetics Project

The open prosthetics project is a innovation that has in a way become like the Linux open source idea, but inclined towards the prosthetics community. No person will gain anything from it financially. But anyone can share their designs and ideas to this project and if their part of this prosthetics community they will sure gain a lot from it. This project will create innovations quicker and make it were someday this industry will offer amputees a great deal of help while adjusting to their new way of life style when it comes to star using prosthetics. I find this idea very smart even if it came about, from people that are in this situation. It seems always that those who are experiencing the problem can come up with the best solutions for it.
Open standards. Which is related to the open myo project. is one of the current projects that the open prosthetics project is working on. is the attempt to change communications from mechanical connections To electrical bus standards like those that are already in use on automobiles.
RFID object identification for control information. Is another project that the open prosthetics project are also working on. This project deals with augmenting an advanced hands ability to move and object. This part of the project would be very useful in home service and hobby robotics.

Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality is a principle that describes that no regulations by Internet service providers or the government in accessing networks can be impose on consumers that use the Internet. the FCC created regulations on wired and wireless broadband access providers. The FCC finds this regulations needed, because it believes allowing gigantic corporations to exercise unfettered control over Americans access to the Internet. according to this rules, service providers can not favor specific Internet content or prevent consumers from accessing a competitors website.
Comcast is a Internet service provider. they also provide TV stations service, this cable provider was blocking peer to peer files and slowing down their Internet service. The FCC order this cable service provider to stop this actions. companies like this one argue that net neutrality of their bandwidth will stop prioritization. which is necessary for the future innovation of the Internet.
net neutrality appear to want to protect the Internet access of Americans in being able to access what ever information that is desired. i feel that if this types of regulations are after my interest i have to agree with them. i don't want companies like comcast being able to block my files just like they did as i already mention before. i don't think i want any company able to have that power over my Internet use. also this companies claim this regulation will hinder the future innovations of the Internet, make me feel that i have to follow this companies rules in order to see new technologies created by them. i think this innovations will come regardless there is this rules by the FCC or not.

Brazil`s change to open source

after hearing the podcast. it appears to be about Brazil's changing from Microsoft software, which Brazil has to pay for, which Brazil has already paid 1 billion dollars to the Microsoft industry already and in order do save the country money, Brazil has decided to change to open source, which is in a Linux system. because of this the country of Brazil is going to save billions of dollars in the future by having made this change from Microsoft software. i also learned from the podcast that Microsoft has 90 percent control over the software industry in the world. i think Brazil change to open source is a good idea and more countries should do the same. Microsoft has to much control over the software industry in the world. i like open source myself and hopefully in the future as Linux gets more user friendly it will become the dominant software used in the world. this way companies like Microsoft would have to lower their prices in the products they sell, so that it makes them more affordable to people of lower income if they choose it. unlike right now were we have to pay over a hundred dollars if we want to stay updated every time Microsoft creates a new software system.

open source licensing

from: Daniel Ledesma
To:     Cathy House
October 14 2011

Dear Cathy
Regarding the use of open source and how its licensing works. i have research how the licensing of open source works, by browsing the web and reading guides and blogs on the matter. it appears that in order to license open source we must follow the FSF`s guidelines, which state that the best way in licensing open source we must use COPYLEFT, which is a general method used for making a program free and modified and extended versions of it must also be free. the distribution terms are found in the GNU general public license and under this terms we must add two elements to our open source. one a copyright notice ( copyright 2011 daniel ledesma ) and two a statement of copying permissions,  the statements of should look like the example below.

This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify
it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by
the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or
(at your option) any later version.

This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful,
but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of
MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.  See the
GNU General Public License for more details.

You should have received a copy of the GNU General Public License
along with this program.  If not, see <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/>.

cathedral and the bazaar

the cathedral and the bazaar. what it is, and why is it important. the cathedral and the bazaar are source code models, but there is a difference between the two. the cathedral model. the source code is available with each software release, but code developed between releases is restricted to an exclusively group of developers. the bazaar model. the code is developed over the Internet for all Internet users to view and contribute to its development. i think is important to know the difference between the two so you have the choice on what type of source code an individual likes better for himself. in my opinion i like the bazaar since is a code developed over the Internet and more brains work better that just a few.

what is an argument. the argument in a textual interface is used to list the files in the current directory in a long formant. example. ls -l,  ls -s,  ls -a.

two examples of  "ls" given by the man pages. "-s" is to sort files by size.   "-a" is for including directories entries whose name start with a dot (.)

linux kernel

The link you provided for me to summarize, was a bit confusing. mostly because of the words they use to explain the process in which the kernel does it job on a operating system. from what i understood on what is the job of the kernel in a operating system in computing, the kernel is the main component of a operating system. it is the string between applications and the processing of data when a command is given to a application. the kernel provides the lower level that application software needs to perform its function. to me in more simple words it is the program in charge of telling other programs what to do. when a command is given by the user.
